Five-Minute Friday Post: The Magic of Touch

Welcome to my first ever Five-Minute Friday post.  Every week on that site, a topic is posted.  The idea is to turn that internal editor off and write for five minutes straight.  Then you post your blog and link up with others who have done the same.

And so, without further ado, here is my first entry…

Topic: Touch

Five Minutes Starts Now…

I remember the first time I touched my youngest daughter, Selah Hope.  Since I had just had a c-section, I couldn’t hold her yet, but they did bring her up to my face.  She was crying, clearly unhappy about being pulled into this cold new world.  I heard the nurse say something about low oxygen levels and needing to take her to the NICU for a time.  But first, they would let me touch her.  John brought this squalling baby’s face next to mine and our cheeks touched.  Almost immediately, Selah calmed down.  She nuzzled my cheek and began rooting.  Even though she didn’t find what she was looking for, she remained in a state of greater calm.  Something about that touch – that simple skin-to-skin cheek-to-cheek contact was enough.

I whispered to her while my husband held her there.  “It’s ok,

Stop!  End of Five Minutes

Topic Continued…

“It’s ok, baby.  It’s ok, sweet Selah.  I’m right here.  Your mommy is here.  I love you.  You’re going to be ok.”

When the nurse came back to check on her a few minutes later, she found that Selah’s oxygen levels had increased to the acceptable range.  No more need for the NICU.  Instead, they took Selah to receive the standard care while the surgeons worked on putting my body back together.

Touch – such a simple thing with such a significant impact.  Spiritual or physical, touch has so much greater of a profound impact than we realize.

May we go forth in our day with a greater awareness of how we are touching others.

  1. Such a sweet moment! I remember holding each of my children in those first moments. That sensation of breathing them in and touching their skin – nothing like it! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Jenny, welcome! This is a most loving, vibrant online community…I hope you will find a home here.

    Your words inspired a short poem. I hope you like it. We have dogs; a LOT of dogs, because people dump them here.

    Hey, buddy, it’s OK,
    you can come out to me.
    I know that you don’t want to play,
    but there’s no need to flee.
    The world’s a big and scary place
    when you’re alone and lost,
    but in these arms I promise grace,
    \and we will bear the cost.
    This is your forever home,
    and we will never fail.
    No need in panic now to roam;
    and you can wag your tail.
    The fear you lived is at an end;
    now rest, friend, on your doggie-bed.
