Inspiring Change

Interview by Jenny Fulton

Cindy Holt Miller is a children’s book author with 30 years of experience as an elementary teacher and administrator. Her series, Zechariah Park, is classified as Children’s Christian Values Fiction and is great for kids between the ages of 8 – 12.

Zechariah Park was inspired by Miller’s grandchildren, and she dedicated the book to them.

“I like to call them my grand blessings,” Cindy shared before getting into more details. “My heart was heavy, for months, seeing all the bad things that have crept into books, movies and TV shows today. After a fun sleepover at our home, I was watching Saturday morning TV with my grand blessings and it was horrible. My oldest grand blessing told me I should write a TV show and that started my wheels turning. Several weeks later, I read about a new movie that was being released by a so called wholesome, family-oriented company and I was appalled by the content and theme of the show. I just felt that whisper in my heart that said it was time to stop complaining about what was out there for our kids and do something about it. I prayed about it and felt it was time. And that is how Zechariah Park was born.”

“What personal life experiences did you pull from as you wrote this first book?”

“I am a mother, grandmother who is called Nana, former elementary school teacher and principal, and I know how impressionable children’s mind are. As a follower of Jesus, I am even more concerned about what our younger generation is learning and putting in their mind.

“Many of the scenarios used for the stories in Zechariah Park have really happened, either in my own family or in the children I have worked with in my career as an educator.”

“How did writing this first book impact you?”

“Writing Zechariah Park has made me more determined and laser focused about sharing God’s Word with children and adults alike. Our world is a mess and our only hope is Jesus. I am convinced if we can make sure our kids know the truth of the gospel and how to live it out in a practical way, our kids can change the culture around them instead of the culture changing our children.”

There are many lessons woven throughout The Tale Spinner.

Some of these include:

  • Growing up is difficult and you will not always know what to do.
  • The Bible has the answers you need and can help you know what to do when you don’t know what to do. You must hear the stories and remember the verses to be able to use them when you need them.
  • Your parents, grandparents and trusted adults can help you with the problems you encounter every day.
  • Life is fun! Laugh, sing and dance, but always remember to hide God’s Word in your heart, as Psalm 119:11 tells us.

“What do you hope readers come away with after reading your book?”

“I hope readers of Zechariah Park will realize that the Bible is God’s Instruction book for life. It is practical, relevant, living, and active. I pray they develop a desire to read, memorize, and use God’s Word every day.”

Activity Book

For those interested in using this series as a curriculum, Miller has created a companion Activity Book for Zechariah Park: The Tale Spinner. This resource, scheduled to be released in the next two weeks, helps children hide the eleven highlighted verses in their hearts. It includes seven fun pages of puzzles, mazes, coloring sheets and fun facts for each verse.

“This will make hiding God’s word in your heart a lot of fun,” Cindy promised.

Purchase the Book

Book Blurb for Zechariah Park: The Tale Spinner

Judah and Myrtle are an old couple who live in Zechariah Park. They are quirky and fun and dress a little crazy. Judah and Myrtle love Jesus, each other, their neighbors, and singing and dancing. Their favorite Bible verse is Psalm 119:11:

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

The families living in Zechariah Park know that growing up is hard and, sometimes, help is needed to know what to do. Myrtle often tells her Zechariah Park friends, “The Bible can help you know what to do when you don’t know what to do, but you have to hide it in your heart first.” To hide God’s word in your heart, you must hear the stories and verses found in the Bible and then remember and use them. That is what Zechariah Park is all about, with a lot of fun and laughter mixed in!

If you want to learn how the Bible can help you know what to do at school, on the bus, playing with friends, and even at home, grab this book and read it. You might even start singing with Myrtle and Judah, “Hide, hide, hide, I hide your Word in my heart….”
