Real International Princesses: Qatari Princess Moza

By Jenny Fulton

Introduction

My book, An International Princess Alphabet Primer, features princesses from countries and cultures around the world. Each character is named after a real person. These are their stories.

Because the alphabet book was written for young kids, the biographies I’m sharing are short, child-friendly, often rose-tinted summaries.

Qatari Princess Moza

Qatari Princess Moza is named for Sheikha Moza bint Nassar, the Matriarch of modern Qatar.

Moza bint Nassar was born in Qatar on August 8, 1959. Her dad was the leader of an important tribe. When he disagreed with and tried to stop the decisions of Qatar’s leader, he was put in prison. Then he was forced to leave the country with his family. Moza lived in Kuwait for most of her childhood.

When Moza was 18 years old, a new ruler allowed the family to return to Qatar. Soon after they returned, Moza married the heir to Qatar’s throne, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. In 1995, when Moza was around 36 years old, Hamad became the ruler. He gave the throne to their son, Tamin, in 2013.

Throughout her life, Sheikha Moza has worked hard to help the people in her country and in other Muslim nations. She took college classes and graduated with Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Qatar University. She also has a Master of Arts degree in Public Policy in Islam and has been given honorary doctorates from several American universities. Many of Sheikha Moza’s biggest projects involve giving children the opportunity to attend better schools, get better jobs when they graduate, and have better, healthier lives.

In addition to all her work trying to help her people, this powerful woman has also become known for the stylish way she dresses.

Because of all her work, Sheikha Moza bint Nassar received the George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service and the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. Plus, Forbes Magazine included her on its list of “100 Most Powerful Women.”
