Indulging Curiosity

Interview by Jenny Fulton

Annette Whipple is a fact-loving children’s book author who celebrates curiosity and inspires a sense of wonder in her informational books for kids.

The first book in The Truth About series, Whooo Knew? The Truth About Owls, answers such questions as: how do owls see in the dark, can owls spin their heads all the way around, and why do owls puke?

After completing her first book, it was simply a matter of choosing the next animal.

Annette shared a little about this process. “When my editor at Reycraft Books and I began talking about other animals we could feature in The Truth About series, we knew we wanted interesting animals that included a wide variety of beautiful ones. Of course, dogs came to mind! Woof! The Truth About Dogs is the second book in the series. Later this year, Scurry! The Truth About Spiders will be out. Next year, we can look forward to a title about frogs and another about cats.”

With the subject chosen, it was time for Annette to indulge her own curiosity before sharing it with others.

“I already knew a decent amount about dogs from years of being around my own and others’ dogs but researching Woof taught me just how incredible they are as an animal and how important they are to people.”

What can dog lovers and highly curious readers expect to find within the pages of this book?

“Each page spread is dedicated to a question about dogs, so readers learn why puppies are born with closed eyes, how dogs communicate, why dogs sniff butts, and so much more.”

Thanks, Annette. Now I must know why dogs sniff butts…

“What do you hope readers come away with after reading your book?” I asked.

“People often think of dogs’ behavior as good or bad, but I learned that so much of what we might consider ‘naughty’ is just a dog being a dog. I hope my readers understand that, as well as the importance of dogs’ body language in understanding doggie communication.”

Annette created a teacher resource for Whooo Knew? The Truth About Owls and will be doing the same for Woof!
